Modern Alpine Architecture

The Aosta Valley offers one of Italy’s most compelling landscapes for exploring modern architecture, becoming after World War II an ideal testing ground for new theories. Cervinia, redesigned between the 1930s and the postwar decades, presents an ambitious Alpine plan: a purpose-built resort at the foot of the Matterhorn with controlled density, functional zoning, and buildings shaping a modern mountain identity. Landmark works include the Pirovano Hotel and Refuge by Franco Albini and Luigi Colombini (1948–52) and the Giomein residential complex by Mario Galvagni and Ezio Tagnocchi (1965–72). In Brusson, the Olivetti Summer Camp by Claudio Conte and Leonardo Fiori (1955–63) exemplifies experimental social architecture. Near Champoluc, Carlo Mollino’s Rascard Garelli (1962–65) reinterprets traditional wooden structures. The route concludes in Gressoney with the Carlo Mollino Mountain Refuge (2008–14), a contemporary homage to Alpine culture, revealing a region where architectural debate shaped everyday building and continues to inspire designers today worldwide.
