Discovering Cities is an innovative architectural format promoted by Domus that explores the most vibrant cities in the world in the company of experts and professional architects.

The first tour will feature the city of Milan from 13 to 15 march 2020, where the historical Magazine of Architecture, Design and Art was born in 1928.

Domus three-day Discovering Cities itinerary will be a unique and rewarding experience, a chance to visit the iconic buildings of the Milanese Modern Style, gaze at the latest hi-rise architecture in new districts, meet architects engaged in major urban change and enjoy a visit to the Domus archives and David Chipperfield’s Milan office, current guest Domus editor.

A new “Milanese Renaissance”

Long ignored by traditional tours of art cities over the last decade, Milan has become a new international destination featuring a number of cultural events that marked the 20th century. As a key player in a narrative mix of art, innovation and industrial production, the city has developed a unique style that is now widely recognized all over the world.

One fact that sums up the city “Renassaince” is the opening of more than ten museums in the last ten years, all conceived around design, architecture and fashion. But it is primarily its physicality, its architecture and latest iconic urban-regeneration projects that makes Milan unique.

Tour trip details and the cooperation with Domus and Guiding Architects Milan

The tour will include a walk trough the city centre in order to grasp the relationship between the architecture of the last century and the city urban fabric. A visit to an apartment in the innovative Via Quadronno building by Angelo Mangiarotti and Bruno Morassutti — introduced by one of their closest collaborators who still occupies their old office — will convey the close bond forged between architecture and design in the 1950s.

A tour of Aldo Rossi and Carlo Aymonino’s Gallaratese residential complex, a visit to the Church of Santa Maria Annunciata by Gio Ponti, a talk at the Domus headquarters and a visit to its archives will complete the narration of its 20th century architecture.

The tour will then focus on the latest and most significant urban changes, Porta Nuova and the CityLife district and on major contemporary architecture such as the Bocconi University campus, with the building designed by Grafton Architects, the new SANAA extension and The Vertical Forest narrated by Gianandrea Barreca, one of its designers. The relationship between art and architecture will be thoroughly explained at the Fondazione Prada and Pirelli Hangar Bicocca Museum, two industrial spaces, recently regenerated to become containers of contemporary art. Lunches and dinners in exclusive restaurant will be the occasion to meet and discuss with protagonists of Milan architecture as as Andreas Kipar (LAND) and Nicola Russi (Laboratorio Permanente).

The tour will be led by Prof. Carlo Berizzi, an expert in modern and contemporary Architecture, one of the founders GA Milano and author of DOM Publisher’s Architectural Guide featuring Milan.
