El 19 de octubre de 1997, el museo Guggenheim Bilbao abrió sus puertas al público. Este fue el comienzo de una nueva era para Bilbao y el País Vasco en su conjunto.

Ahora, en 2017, es el momento de celebrar no sólo el 20 aniversario de este museo diseñado por Frank O. Gehry, sino también los más de 19 millones de turistas que lo han visitado en este tiempo. Como una importante contribución al denominado «efecto Bilbao», el museo ha influido drásticamente en la imagen de la ciudad y la región en todo el mundo. •
