Graz: TIP nominated for Mies van der Rohe Award
The Theater im Palais (TIP) building conversion at Graz University of Art, opened in late 2014, has been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe award.
Once the horse stables of the regional governor, the building served as an educational institute for actors and opera singers from the 1980s onwards and has now been totally revamped. Young local team Balloon won the competition for the conversion. Their concept: A new spatial layer as an adequate vis-à-vis of the historical palace. A golden ribbon – a perforated metal sheet – has been spanned over the existing building and the new parts, the foyer and the lounge. The newly added parts not only unite the two counterparts but they have another amazing effect: A third building, the MUMUTH (house for music and musical theatre), built in 2009 by UN Studio, is now better integrated into the common space between the palace and the TIP.
