Showcasing the OUT & ABOUT guided tours: Art Pavilion M. | EUmies Awards 2024
From April until the end of June, the OUT & ABOUT guided tours have traveled across Europe. The events <<OUT & ABOUT. Discovering Architecture. EUmies Awards 2024>>, took place in many countries, inculding Slovenia, Austria, Portugal, France, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Estonia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Ireland, Belgium, Norway, Croatia, Germany, Netherlands, Greece and Poland. Coordinated by Creative Europe, Fundació Mies van der Rohe, and Guiding Architects, these OUT & ABOUT events offered everyone the opportunity to gain deeper insights into the architecture and public spaces of their cities or regions, together with the architects, clients and users of the buildings.

One of the first was a visit to Art Pavilion M. in Almere (Netherlands). The project by Studio Ossidiana is an art centre, floating in the Weerwater lake. It’s a sequence of frames: a ring, which encircles a water placa, a circle, which serves as terrace for the museum, and the museum building itself. A lightweight timber and polycarbonate structure encloses the exhibition rooms. It is fully enveloped in a curtain with cut-out shapes that allow light to filter through in different ways. Its orientation on a north-south axis follows planetary alignments, with the four windows looking at the dawn and dusk axis of winter and summer solstices. A huge hit during the visit was the special material that the architects developed for this pavilion and which they call Surf-and-Turf-Terrazzo: a pale pink composite that includes various types of shells and was used for the floors, but also for the ticket counter.
Thanks to Alessandra Covini and Giovanni Bellotti + Studio Ossidiana (Architects); Aldo Bruining, M. (Museum) + architour for their support.
