Ready-to-book Tours : Oslo

The former Oslo airport at Fornebu, only 7 km from the city center, is being rebuilt as a new urban development, with 7000 flats and 20000 workplaces. The project offers good examples of housing and office architecture, as well as great landscape architecture in a beautiful setting by the Oslo fjord. After the opening of Oslo’s new airport Gardermoen in 1998, a long debate ensued about the reuse of the old Fornebu airport. The city of Oslo and the Norwegian State as the owners of the airport wanted a high exploitation, while the local municipality demanded a more modest use of the area. Infrastructure, access to the nearby fjord and preservation of elements of the airport as historical monuments are also central aspects of this project.

Introduction to the project, including historical and political background, environmental issues of an old airport, planning principles and infrastructure. Starting point at the old control tower, where the central park axis begins.

Walk through the central Nansen Park (Landscape architects Bjørbekk & Lindheim 2012).

Housing projects and the new shopping mall with flats on the roof (div. arch.).

Portalbygget, office project by a-lab arch. (2009) External structural elements, sculptural conference hall as focal point, complementing the axis of the old terminal.

Main hall of the old airport, arch. Odd Nansen (1963) recently renovated as a historical monument, with extensive wall paintings by Kai Fjell, inside visit (office hours on weekdays only).

Statoil regional and international offices, by a-lab (2012). Strong sculptural expression, dramatic steel structure, glazed main lobby (visit to entrance lobby possible on weekdays).

Coffee-break at seaside restaurant, formerly the seaplane terminal of the airport.

Rolfsbukta housing estate, Arcasa arch. (2008 – 2014), flats on the waterfront with their own yacht marina, underground parking, neighborhood park.

Telenor office, by NBBJ arch. (2001). The new head office of Norway’s telecom company was the first major project at Fornebu, planted demonstratively at the start of the runway, effectively ending all plans for a local business airport. The curved walls enclose a huge public space, embellished with works of art, small green meeting places and fountains.

Telenor Arena, by HRTB arch. (2009). This multi-purpose hall is basically an indoor football hall, with a capacity of 12000 spectators, but is today mainly used for concerts, when twice as many persons can enjoy the music. This was the venue of the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest.

Return to the city with charter bus, alternatively lunch in the project area.
