The relocation of the École Centrale to the Saclay plateau in 2017, after more than fifty years in Châtenay-Malabry, released a large site at the entrance to the town. On this cleared plot, the firm a+ samueldelmas architectes urbanistes set out to design a school that uses precisely the right material, in the right quantity, and in the right place. Conceived as a pedagogical instrument, the building reinterprets vernacular knowledge through three reimagined construction techniques: load-bearing façades in dry rammed concrete made from recycled demolition aggregates, hemp-and-earth partition walls, and timber floors weighted with recycled sand.
