Destination:
Valparaíso

Valparaíso is a historic port city whose urban and architectural identity has been deeply influenced by its role as a gateway for immigrants arriving in Chile from the mid-nineteenth century onward. This cultural exchange, together with its distinctive topography—composed of 42 hills, steep ravines, and stairways descending toward the Pacific Ocean—has shaped a built environment characterized by its morphological complexity.

At the foot of the hills, a narrow urban platform gradually expanded through successive land reclamation projects, enabling the growth of the city’s port, commercial, and financial activities. The dialogue between the flat city "el plan" and the surrounding hills finds one of its most characteristic expressions in the network of funiculars that connects the different urban elevations. Along the slopes, the diverse typologies of colorful hillside houses, intricate systems of terraced public spaces, and narrow pedestrian passageways define a distinctive way of inhabiting steep terrain.

Valparaíso Bay unfolds as a natural amphitheater facing the Pacific, where the terrain became an opportunity for new forms of design and territorial occupation. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, the city reveals a dense layering of architectural, historical, and social traces that reflect the complex construction of its urban identity.
